You wouldn't expect an artist to create a masterpiece the first time they pick up a paintbrush. It takes practice and time and more practice to write great fiction, and whether all that time and practice goes into one project or into successive ones is entirely up to the writer. As long as you're having fun with the current MS, it's a good reason to keep going with it! Personally, I hit the "this isn't fun anymore" wall with my own MS last week, and I am still trying to figure out if I can go on with it or not.
It makes so much sense when you put it that way! A part of me gets a bit restless thinking about the amount of time that goes into such a project, I guess. But well, practice takes time.
Sorry to hear about your current MS! May I ask what it is that made you hit that wall? Have you decided already what to do with it?
I have been struggling with the same section of the book for a year now and still haven’t found a solution that makes me happy. After reading at my last writers group, I just hit a point where of wondering if anything about the book mattered. I haven’t decided anything about it yet. It’s been a stressful couple of months on multiple fronts, which feels like a bad time to make major decisions. So I’m gonna work on a couple short pieces and see how I feel about it in a couple weeks.
Damn, I see! Hitting a wall over and over again with a specific section of your story must be incredibly frustrating, I'm sorry to hear that 🥺 It sounds like a good idea to let it simmer for a few weeks before making major decisions - you never know what the subconscious will work out in the meantime.
I hope you get a break from all the stress in the next days/weeks 🙏🏼 and feel free to let me know what you decide to do with your MS, I'd be super curious to know!
It reminds me of when I wrote short stories or mangas as a teenager. The result was of course anything but good, but materializing the core idea that I had and loved was a lot of fun.
My respect for working systematically on your work!
The creative work of sitting down and materializing an idea of yours has something magical, doesn't it? Ah, short stories and mangas! Those sound like good memories!
Thank you so much for reading and following my progress 🙏🏼
Oooh connecting the dots and defining the edges of a story are both so fun! I love hearing your writing process, and I’m glad you feel like you’re making progress with your novel even if the method was unexpected. Best of luck to you as always!
I knowww it's such an unexplicable feeling the one you get when elements of a story click in place in a way you didn't see before, just like finding the right orientation for puzzle pieces. I love it too!
Thank you so much and all the best for your writing too!
